The purpose of the Indicator Category section in NEO CANDO is help the user narrow the over 10,000 variables in the Social and Economic Report to a few choices. In this section users are NOT choosing variables.
The chosen Indicator Categories drive NEO CANDO because the data are not available for all 17 Counties, geographic levels, geographic areas, or years. For instance, crime data are only available in the city of Cleveland. Therefore, if the user selects Crime ?Cleveland Police (CPD), the option to select a county becomes disabled and all of the non-Cleveland neighborhoods, Census Tracts, and other geographies within Cuyahoga County disappear.
The Detailed Category helps the users narrow their search of the chosen subject categories.
The Detailed Category Filter is needed when a Indicator/Detailed Category contains several different ways to report data.
The Social and Economic Report contains two different types of data sources, census data which are only available for 2 time periods (1990 and 2000), and administrative data such as crime, births, property and sales information, child maltreatment, etc.; which are available annually. When an administrative data subject category is chosen a year menu will appear. The year menu will be populated with only those years in which data exists for the chosen subject categories.
The purpose of the Indicator Category menu, Detailed Category menu, Detailed Category Filter, and Year menu is to help focus NEO CANDO users so they are not bombarded with hundreds of variables.
